St. Luke School now holds dual accreditation through the Southern Association of Independent Schools (“SAIS”) and Cognia.

St. Luke School uses a variety of resources to support the SLS Curriculum Perspective.  The SLS Curriculum is based on age-appropriate activities as well as opportunities for authentic individual and group learning projects.  The curriculum was also developed to meet individual student needs.  A complete copy of the SLS Curriculum Perspective is available in both Media Centers for review.  For more information on the textbook and curriculum support materials used by SLS, please click here

All teachers take student potential very seriously when designing lessons.  Teachers ensure all learning styles are met by incorporating different methods, activities, technology, and supplemental material into the curriculum.  Curriculum and instruction are reviewed regularly at department and subject area meetings.  Our curriculum is designed to exceed state standards as well as those of local public and private schools.

Middle school students take math placement tests during the spring to determine their coursework for the following school year.

The school provides many opportunities for students to develop their potential in the areas of music, art, Spanish, STEAM, physical education, and other electives and “specials” classes during school hours.  There are also numerous extracurricular activities for students to get involved in.

St. Luke School is accredited by AdvancED/Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (“SACS”), and received that initial accreditation in 2004.  The school was accredited by  AdvancED/SACS in 2012, at which time they identified St. Luke School as highly functional in all seven standards.  St. Luke School now holds dual accreditation through the Southern Association of Independent Schools (“SAIS”) and Cognia.

Counselor’s Corner

The counseling program at St. Luke School consists of various services, including classroom guidance lessons, individual counseling, and small group counseling as needed.  Topics for classroom guidance lessons are often guided by the imminent needs of students at each grade level.  These lessons cover such topics as the Good Touch/Bad Touch Program in grades one, three, and five; personal and social domains; academic support skills; and career awareness.  Services are available to all students, Junior Kindergarten through eighth grade.  Individual services are offered to students through self-referral and teacher or parent referrals.  Additional services provided include parent/teacher consultation and coordination of services for students.

Media Center

St. Luke School continually strives to provide every student with the best possible education, preparing all students to function effectively in the society in which they live.  Therefore, we believe that all students must develop competencies in using and applying a broad range of technologies and media to support lifelong learning.

St. Luke School’s vision – as it relates to the Media Center – is to aid its students in becoming skilled, knowledgeable, independent, and self-directed learners who are comfortable with and proficient in using technology and media in all its forms as information resources.  Through the use of technology and media, with its varied aspects and applications, each student at St. Luke School will be afforded opportunities and challenges that will allow them to successfully engage the future.

Learning Lab

St. Luke School accepts students based on the belief that they are able to handle a strong academic curriculum.  Sometimes there are challenges that impact a student’s ability to perform in the classroom.  In those cases, our special Learning Lab may be recommended.  The Learning Lab is designed to provide individualized holistic educational programs for children with average to above average intelligence who have a diagnosis of Learning Disability, Attention Deficit Disorder, or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or a primary spectrum of behaviors characteristic of one of these disorders.  The student: teacher ratio for the Learning Lab is 5:1. This program allows students to be involved in all aspects of regular school campus activities, such as music, art, PE, Spanish, STEAM, and chapel, while ensuring that their individual needs are also being addressed.

Technology Use

St. Luke School faculty, staff, and students embrace technology.  Whether it’s the use of the Aquos Boards for a Kindergarten Math lesson or the use of iPads by students in second grade for iMovie book reports or laptops for research, collaboration, and presentation methods in grades third through eighth technology is an integral component of our curriculum.

Why personal devices? Personal devices allow students to participate in lessons enhanced with technology and for that technology to become integrated into their learning both at school and at home.  All Internet access is through the school WiFi-filtered network only.

  • Students in grades first through third without personal devices are given access to a school-owned device. A classroom set of iPads are available for Kindergarten through second graders and a mobile Chromebook lab is available for third graders. Approved personal devices include laptops, Chromebooks, and tablets.
  • Students in grades fourth through eighth are expected to bring a laptop or Chromebook to school each day or on days when a teacher requests.

Safety on the Internet: Cyber safety is a key component of our emphasis on digital citizenship. Lessons are provided to the students which will transfer to student use of technology even when not at school.

This is an exciting time as we encourage our 21st-century digital learners to use mobile devices in the classroom.  Please refer to the Acceptable Use Policy for more information on the school’s technology-related policies.

Testing

Each Spring, students in grades 1-8 participate in norm-referenced testing by taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS), with students in the third, fifth, and eighth grades completing the full battery. These are nationally-normed tests taken by students across the country.  This gives us the ability to compare our students against the norms established in subject area and in each grade using percentiles, normal curve equivalents, and grade equivalents.  St. Luke School students consistently average well above grade level in every area.  You may obtain more information about the ITBS from the publisher, Riverside Publishing.  To see the most recent test results for SLS, please click here
